Percona contributes OpenEverest to CNCF as open source project
Percona has announced that it is donating its automated database provisioning and management platform, Everest, to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). Alongside this move, the platform has been rebranded as OpenEverest and made open source, aiming to foster broader collaboration and innovation in the database ecosystem.
Modular Design for Flexibility
OpenEverest has been redesigned to feature a modular architecture, allowing users to customize their database environments. This flexibility includes the ability to mix and match database engines, storage backends, and deployment strategies. The platform also supports plugins, providing users the freedom to integrate their preferred tools or create custom solutions.
"Want to integrate with your favorite monitoring tool? It’s a plugin. Need to sync data between database clusters of different vendors? Plugin. Custom backup solutions? Plugin. The modular architecture means you’re never locked into a single vendor’s ecosystem – mix and match the tools that work best for your needs", states OpenEverest’s website.

Continued Support for Users
Percona has assured its existing Everest users that they will continue to receive enterprise-grade reliability, security, and support. Although OpenEverest is now an independent open source project, Percona plans to remain an active contributor, ensuring continuity for the platform’s community and users.
Establishing Solanica for OpenEverest Development
As part of its commitment to OpenEverest, Percona is establishing a new company named Solanica. This organization will focus exclusively on the development of OpenEverest and the growth of its community.
"OpenEverest represents the next stage in the evolution of the project", said Blair Rampling, vice president of product management at Percona. "By establishing it as an independent open source project, we are creating the conditions for broader collaboration, faster innovation, and long-term sustainability, while maintaining continuity and enterprise-grade support for users."
A Step Toward Open Source Innovation
This donation of OpenEverest to the CNCF marks a significant step for Percona and the database community. By making the platform open source, Percona aims to encourage the development of new tools and solutions while providing users with a more flexible and vendor-independent experience.
With its modular design and community-driven approach, OpenEverest is positioned to become a key player in the open source and cloud-native database space. As the project evolves, its focus on innovation and collaboration will be critical in shaping the future of database management.
